‘Tis The Feel Good Season!

You know, some things in life are just better doubled. Like…

  • Rainbows

  • Scotch

  • Cheeseburgers

  • Money

Some of those are easier to experience than others.  For example, you can just go ahead and order a double Scotch or a double cheeseburger… or a double Scotch and a double cheeseburger.

On the other hand, in order to see a double rainbow or have your money doubled you have to wait for an opportunity for the conditions to be just right.

Well guess what? Conditions are in our favor right now and I’m not talking about sunlight refracting off water droplets!

Right now, you have an exciting opportunity to help us turn $10,000 into $20,000 by the end of this year!

A generous donor stepped forward and offered to match dollar for dollar all donations made to the John Gullo Home For Children before December 31st, 2022 up to $10,000.

That means your $25 donation becomes $50, your $100 donation becomes $200, and your $250 donation becomes $500!

We first announced this opportunity on the weekend and I can’t tell you the joy that I’ve felt with each and every donation that has already come in regardless of its size. It’s because I get to see the thermomether go up with each one which means we are getting closer and closer to seeing this home built . . . . .together we are getting closer to helping the vulnerable children in BCS who are often left to fend for themselves when their family has to leave because of a medical crisis in the family.

This is a very real problem and the DIF (the Mexican governmental department responsible for child welfare) is eager to help us to place these children in the home once built.

As of the writing of this Feel Good News we are already over a quarter of the way there! If you would like to join us in watching the thermometer rise each day check out this page. Is it already hotter that this?:

So… what are you waiting for?
Donate right now by clicking the button below to double your donation and double your impact!

*When donating, be sure to indicate that your donation is for the John Gullo Home for Children in order for it to qualify for the donor match. If donating via credit card or paypal there is a drop down menu with that option.

Updates On Our Initiatives & Partnerships

jjjjj

The John Gullo Home For Children

On December 3rd I was absolutely thrilled to welcome members of Rotary Club of Canada’s Sea to Sky governing body including Liz Scroggins, Area Governor, and Liz Kelly, International Grant Writer, to Los Barriles.

December 3rd was a very busy day. First, we met up with John Gullo who has made a generous donation and is being honoured with the naming of the facility.

Together, we made the winding drive to El Cardonal to visit the building site of the new home.

With the support of our very own Los Barriles Rotary Club  this group of Rotarians, including Pemberton, Whistler, Whistler Millennium, Squamish, New Westminster Royal City, and Vancouver Mountain View having been raising funds and writing grants to Rotary International after signing a memorandum of understanding with Leaders2Give to cover the costs of the commercial kitchen.

After touring the site and reviewing the plans we enjoyed a stunning lunch at Hotel Pescadores Paraiso where discussion over the new home continued.

There was no rest for these weary travellers, however, as we all had to make the trip back to Los Barriles to setup for the 7th annual Taste of East Cape. Leaders2Give was honoured to host the bar service that evening with all proceeds going to the John Gullo Home for Children.

Special thanks to Leaders2Give’s Volunteer Coordinator Shelley Aibner who put in countless hours to make our part of the event a success and to Board member Betsy Shepard and her husband Will for working the Leaders2Give info table that night. And thanks to all who offered support by visiting the table and buying beach bags.

New Creation Kids Children’s Home

As you probably know by now, Leaders2Give is an all volunteer organization whose purpose is to protect vulnerable children - and the kids that find themselves living at New Creation Kids certainly fall under that category. The role that Leaders2Give plays with this facility is financial sustainment.

Thanks to you - our generous donors - we are able to cover the costs of food, school, uniforms and books, propane, electricity, and more.

Obviously, this goes a long way but the real glue that holds things together are the many volunteers who donate their time to help keep things running.

In fact, a group of kind souls who wish to remain anonymous have been hard at work there over the last few weeks working at the childrens home.

They completed a roof overhaul, purchased and installed a new fridge / freezer, brought along some new mattresses, dropped of a few chicks for the pen, wrapped and delivered some Xmas presents, hauled away debris and trash to clear out the grounds, and more!

This group is also working with our friends at ToroNet to scope and source batteries for the new solar panels to take the home completely off grid.

On behalf of our entire board of directors and the children we serve please accept our sincere gratitude!

The East Cape Health Center

The East Cape Health Center is talking about Women’s Health Care for the East Cape.  Actually, they’re not just talking, they’re building out a private / personal consultation room, bringing in the appropriate equipment, and partnering with Dra Ingrid Quintero - OB/Gyn Specialist.

The East Cape women deserve to have improved diagnoses and treatments in a nice comfy room that is fully equipped for private consultations and birthing.

In Char Wenger’s words:  “As the East Cape community continues to grow we realize the importance of comprehensive women’s care… especially for those most in need”.  The Clinic will need help to bring this very much needed service / quality of care to the community.

The East Cape Guild

The good news is the East Cape Guild will be funding more scholarships this year than any time in its over 25 year history; 143 High school students and 75 college scholarships for the 2022-23 school year. The other good news is that to raise the necessary funds for these scholarships, the Guild will be holding a series of fun events, dates are listed below.  No bad news.

The Parade of Homes and Poker Run will occur on November 30, 2022.  Tickets are currently available for purchase at Homes and Lands of Baja.

On January 14, 2023 there will be a a new event, an Education Trail Walk/Hike/Run.

Back by popular demand is the Guild scavenger hunt to be held on February 2, 2023.  Last year, was the first scavenger hunt/dinner and fun was had by all.  This year the scavenger hunt will be partnered with a Tamale cook-off.

The Epic Bike Race will take place on February 9, 2023.

The Guild will bring back Monte Carlo night, one of the most popular events in the area.  Monte Carlo night will take place on February 26, 2023 at the Spa Rancho Buena Vista, one of the Guild’s longest and most loyal supporters.

Finally, the Guild is excited to announce it will host its very first Music Festival with a concert to take place on March 25, 2023 and a more exclusive dinner/concert event prior to the concert.  The event will include a group of song writers from Nashville, Rob Lamothe (a songwriter/performer and lead singer of RiverDogs) and some other talent.

Look for more information on these events on the Everything Los Barriles Facebook page and on the Baja Pony Express e-newsletter.

John Plotkin’s annual East Cape calendar this year will benefit the Guild.  The calendar will be available for purchase at the Los Barriles Saturday markets beginning December, at Guild meetings, and at the Pickleball Tournament.

Guild meetings are open to the public. Learn more on how you can help our community by providing education.

Feeding The Hungry

Feeding The Hungry has started work on a new and more interesting Facebook page.  We will be adding photos to make the page more appealing to the viewers, while attempting to keep it current. So, click the link below and follow us:

facebook.com/FeedingTheHungryLosBarriles/

To help keep serving the most vulnerable of our community, Feeding The Hungry will be sending out an email reminding their contributors that they can donate and obtain a 2022 tax deduction through Leaders2Give.

They hope to raise enough donations so they can increase the value of the food vouchers to help offset the inflation of the food purchased with the vouchers.

SNAP - SPAY NEUTER AND PREVENTION

SNAP leadership is proud to announce that because of community support and generous monetary donations, they have been able to fund 1030 pet sterilizations this year, with 4 weeks to go until 2023!

A big shout out to Emma Nicholson of Ronival Real Estate in Los Barriles and Ronival Real Estate founders, Nick and Rocio Fong.

They hosted and highlighted 14 non-profit organizations and brought the community out in droves to learn about the organizations.  SNAP was thrilled to be included in this event and spread their message with new and returning community members.

As a follow up to SNAP/L2G's participation in the fundraiser for the x-ray machine and other equipment for our SNAP veterinarian at Clinica Veterinaria Buenos Aires all the equipment has been purchased and installed improving the services that are able to be provided in Los Barriles.

SNAP is excited about 2023! It will be their 10th year of existence. Look for their calendar on Facebook of fun events each month to celebrate and continue the great success of educating the communities about responsible pet ownership.

Líderes Para Dar

Líderes Para Dar is the Mexican non-profit organization which serves as a sister organization to Leaders2Give. Líderes Para Dar, which translates to Leaders To Give, will assist Leaders2Give in fulfilling its charitable work in Mexico.

The two organizations share the same mission. Alongside Leaders2Give, Líderes Para Dar is over seeing the construction of the El Cardonal Children’s Home Project and will also be sharing oversight of its operation once the facility is functioning.
